Top 5 Best Mattress for Bunk Beds Reviews

Based on my tests, research, and overall customer reviews, these are the five mattresses for bunk bed reviews you can get this 2019:

Signature Sleep 8 Inch Coil Mattress - Durable and Comfortable

When I first received the Signature Sleep Mattress, my kids and I were excited! I admire the company for their reliable and adequate packaging.

As for setting up, once I had it laid down and cut away the plastic, it began to expand immediately. It took a day or two to grow fully, so it was quick, and I didn't need to do anything. Plus, there wasn't any smell!

Once my kids laid down, the first thing they said was, "it's so soft!" And it really is! It didn't feel like you were sleeping on a cloud, but it did feel plush and comfortable, so I was pretty sure my kids would be sleeping soundly at night.

Not only did they sleep well, but they also complained less about their shoulder and neck pain, which usually happens as they are side sleepers.

All in all, it's worth the price for being an affordable and enjoyable mattress my kids love and have a good sleep in.

Pros
  • Has the perfect balance of plush and firmness
  • A mattress is supportive and lessens body pain
  • Arrives in great packaging and quick expansion
  • Comes at affordable prices with great value
Cons
  • It may be too firm for some kids
  • Mattress begins sagging within a year

Modway Aveline 8" Gel Memory Foam Mattress - Pressure-Relieving and Cooling

What I love about the Modway Aveline are its awesome support and premium quality. It's CertiPUR-US certified, so you're assured of it being made of the harmless materials, which is safe for your little ones.

The packaging and setup was normal, taking about three days to get to its full size. It also had no significant smell, just a slight chemical odor which was gone by the time it was ready to use.

However, I do think it may be a bit too firm for kids. While it was the perfect firmness level for me, my kid had to get used to it for a bit, using a lot of soft pillows before he got used to it. Fortunately, the firmness did help with his back, as he complains less about body aches when he gets up. Plus, he sleeps straight from it!

The twin size and eight-inch thickness are perfect for both kids and adults. It fits well on bunk beds and can support children and adults of any weight. Overall, a good purchase!

Pros
  • Great size and optimum thickness for support
  • Less back pain and relieves pressure well
  • Mattress can support heavy built people
Cons
  • Too firm and takes time to get used to
  • It has a bit of an odor

Zinus Memory Foam 5'' Bunk Bed - Supportive and High-Quality

While I was shopping for the best one, I stumbled on the Zinus Memory Foam, which looked very cute and perfect for kids! I like the fact that there were different colors to choose from, so my child was able to select the ideal mattress he wanted!

He chose the Khaki color, which looked great when it was fully expanded. The colors were a bit lighter than what was advertised in the photo, but that's no huge problem for me.

Expansion and setup were quick, and I do like the mattress itself. However, it's best used for a daybed or your younger child because it's thinner and may not be equipped to support a heavier person (let's say, an adult weight).

But I'm not reviewing this for myself but my kid on his bunk bed! I'm glad that the mattress is lightweight for our solid bunk bed frame to support. As for the quality of sleep, my kid has no complaints and loves the bed and color.

Pros
  • Comes in different colors to choose from
  • Very comfortable and kid sleeps easily
  • Uses natural plant oil for added freshness
Cons
  • Thin mattress, not for heavy and older children
  • Some complaints of it not being plush enough

DreamFoam Bedding 7-Inch TriZone Mattress - Luxurious Feel

If you need a full-sized mattress for the bottom part of the bunk, then you'll appreciate the Dreamfoam Bedding TriZone Mattress.

I like that it's incredibly durable, lasting for up to three to five years as long as you maintain it properly. It's had me save a ton of money in the long run, with my child having no significant complaints throughout those years.

He sleeps well with it (even if he has different sleeping positions throughout one night!), and doesn't complain of pain and discomfort when he wakes up. It does the job in supporting my little one, though it's best mostly for a child because it may end up deflating quicker if used by a heavy adult.

For its durability and at such an affordable price, I can say it's a great bed to invest in for your child's bunk bed.

Pros
  • Good support for any sleeping position
  • Sturdy and durable, built to last for years
  • A child sleeps soundly and without pain
Cons
  • Can’t be used for heavier people
  • May deflate quicker and needs a mattress topper

Linenspa Memory Foam and Innerspring Mattress - The Breathable and Easy Setup

Last but not the least, I have the Linenspa Hybrid Mattress.

This is a fantastic and comfortable bed my little one enjoys! He says it's way better than his old toddler bed, with it feeling softer and plusher. Apparently, it's like he was sleeping in a hotel!

But for an adult's point of view, I believe that while it does a job well done for keeping my kid comfortable and supported, it does require a topper if someone heavier was going to use it.

However, I do see his point and feel how convenient it is to sleep on. Even I've slept on it a few nights myself because it has me wake up with less pain! I wish it were a bit cooling.

Pros
  • Comes with a breathable and soft cover
  • Plush and very comfortable to sleep on
  • Easy to handle and setup
  • Has helped relieve pressure points for kids and adults
Cons
  • May require a GEL mattress topper for a cooler sleep
  • A bit too firm and needs time to get used to

Importance of Best Mattress For Kids

cheap bunk beds for kids with mattress

You're probably wondering: Why is it so important to make sure your kid has a quality mattress? I was a bit taken aback by the prices that it had me contemplate on getting something cheaper. Plus, it was also a bit of a hassle having to do all the research for just a plain old mattress.

But a mattress isn't just something you lay down on! It can make or break your sleep. The bed' quality can also affect the way you and your children sleep.

Here are more specific benefits of investing in a quality mattress for your child:

1

Child's Development

Growth and development are crucial for your little one at such a young age. With proper sleep and spinal adjustment with a supportive mattress, they will grow properly and without any significant bone problems. Plus, adequate rest is also helpful in keeping them growing strong and healthy!

2

More Energy and Concentration

Just like us adults, kids need the proper sleep to gain energy and focus for their busy day ahead.

With a breathable and comfortable mattress, your child won't be tossing and turning all night. As a result, they wake up feeling happier and with the energy needed for school and extracurricular activities.

3

Strength and Durability

Lastly, you get to benefit from your child's mattress as you won't need to spend more money and time on replacing it every few months!

With a durable and flippable mattress made of premium materials, there won't be a worry about wear and tear for years to come.

How to Choose the Best Mattress Fit Your Bunk Bed Dimensions?

best mattress for bunk bed

The reason why I chose to invest in bunk beds for my kids is that of how great it saves up on space! I also love that it looks fabulous and functional, with the ability to also have storage space at the bottom. Some bunk beds can have a mattress on top and drawers or even a desk at the bottom bunk!

However, your child can only reap the full benefits of the best bunk bed mattress. But how can you select one from the many available? Here are the helpful tips and factors to consider:

1

Size and Thickness

Bunk beds, especially on the top, will require a certain size. Usually, the frame is made for twin or full cushions, so make sure that you measured both frames and wanted the mattress to avoid returning and hassling yourself on shipment.

Furthermore, make sure that the bed is thick enough with proper padding and foam layers for both comfort and support. 8 to 10 inches is good enough.

2

Firmness and Comfort

You can find firmness levels between 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest. The recommended level depends on your child's preference and specific needs.

Some may want a firmer mattress for better support and pressure relief (especially if they suffer from back problems at a young age). Others will want something soft and plush, feeling like a cloud!

It's best to consult your little one and have them test out what works best for them. If not, you can always go for the universal comfort, which is between 5 to 7!

3

Type of Bed

There are different types of beds suitable for specific needs and budgets:

  • Innerspring is supported by coils, which give a bouncier feeling. While they are cheaper, they are not as durable compared to other mattresses.
  • Memory foam mattresses are gaining popularity as they are not only soft but also with the proper support known to relieve pain. However, they can sleep quite hot, which isn't suitable for warm climates.
  • Hybrid mattresses are a combination of both innerspring and memory foam. It offers both a bouncy feeling and the pressure-relieving support while being extremely durable. But, they are the most expensive of the bunch!
  • Latex mattresses are made of natural materials, bringing in the hypoallergenic and safe for children. They also provide the similar benefits of a memory foam mattress but aren't as durable and quite pricey, too.

4

Brand and Price

When it comes to purchasing a mattress, you get what you pay for. The more expensive it is, the better the quality.

However, that doesn't go for all mattresses! You can find the best products based on your budget, as long as you do your research and choose the reputable and trusted brands.

Just avoid scrimping and overspending. Products for bunk beds can go between $300 to $1,000!

Maintaining and Cleaning Children's Mattresses

bunk beds with mattresses included

Once you know how to select the bunk bed mattresses, it's time to learn about cleaning! When you clean and maintain, it will not only get rid of unattractive stains and smells. Doing so will also lengthen its lifespan and keep it performing well.

If you're not familiar with how to keep your child's mattress clean and well-maintained, here are some tips to help you out!

  • Teach your little one about the importance of keeping their mattresses clean and free from dirt and damage. Set a few ground rules when in bed, such as not lying down with dirty clothes or shoes, or to avoid eating and drinking while in bed. Prevention is critical to prevent any significant stains and accidents.
  • Don't have your kids jump on the bed, as this won't only risk them of injury, but it shortens the mattress' lifespan as well!
  • Flip the mattress every six months and change its position, with the top being at the foot of the bed frame and vice versa. This will make the distribution of weight equal, keeping the mattress performing well for longer.
  • Strip and vacuum your mattress once every six months to get rid of any small dirt and crumbs. Avoid using cleaning solutions, as this can make the mattress more prone to mildew and mold from the moisture.
  • Wash your sheets every week with hot water. If your child wets the bed, then I recommend that you replace it immediately and use a mix of baking soda and water to get rid of the stain and odor.
  • For allergy-prone children, use plastic or cotton mattress covers to delay allergen growth and to keep the mattress clean.
