What Is a Water Pillow and How Does It Work?

For those who aren't familiar with this product, it's basically a pillow that uses water as a pillow. Usually made with a blend of polyester and cotton for its top layer, it offers comfort and a certain degree of firmness levels (according to how you want).

Water Pillow Reviews for Kids

Water pillow has a water bladder secured inside, at its base. It looks and feels just like a traditional pillow, but with water pockets, for you to customize its filling setting. When filled to your desired firmness, it will be able to reduce neck pain and give you a comfortable night's sleep.

So instead of the typical stuffing flattening after head pressure and weight, a water pillow will be able to stay firm throughout the night. As a result, your neck and head are fully supported the entire time, reducing pressure while offering a sound sleep.

Two Types of Water Pillows

There isn't just one universal water pillow for everyone. You can find two different kinds of this product, each having their own advantages and disadvantages to cater to what you need.

These are the most used and bestselling water pillows available. They have a polyester water pouch and its outer lining is made of polyester fiber with hypoallergenic filling.

You fill this pillow with water to use, making it adjustable according to the firmness level you like. So you can have a soft or firm pillow, changing it up every night as needed!

What's great about this is that it feels just like a traditional pillow, but since its stuffing won't collapse, there's more support and stability to lessen one's pain.

These are specialized pillows made of memory foam filling and is saturated with water. That way, it's able to disperse heat better, keeping your head and neck cool while you sleep.

Caring for a Water Pillow

Water Pillow Reviews with Easy Care

Now that you're familiar with what a water pillow is and how it works, how will you be able to use and maintain it? To care for a water pillow, here are some helpful tips to follow:

  • Before you fill the water inside the pillow, make sure that there is no air and that it's emptied from the pouch. This prevents water from sloshing and creating noise while you sleep or move around.
  • DO NOT use hot water when filling the pillow! Only use cold or lukewarm water that doesn't exceed 38 degrees C. Use tap water only, or if you use well water, add a drop of bleach.
  • Replace the water yearly, adjusting the amount every now and then according to what you prefer.
  • Washing the pillow is easy. Just empty the water from the pillow and place the casing in the washing machine, using the delicate or gentle cycle and cold water. DO NOT bleach and use mild detergent only.
  • When drying your pillow, you can opt to air it out or use the dryer on low heat. DO NOT iron or dry clean it, as this will damage the pillow and its durability.

Top 5 Best Water Pillow Reviews

Based on my research, tests, and overall customer reviews, these are the five water pillow reviews to choose from:

The Therapeutic and Pain-Relieving

ASleepyWolf rating

  • The pillow helped reduce neck and back pain within a week
  • Made of sturdy material made to last for a few years
  • Has a soft top layer for a comfortable night's sleep
  • The instructions are a bit faulty and take time to understand
  • It might have molds if not taken cared for properly

What makes the Original Water Pillow by Mediflow the best on my water pillow reviews because of its effectivity! I was amazed as to how it reduced my neck pain within days. While it isn't a miracle worker (and the cases of pain relief varies), it does the job in keeping me both pain-free and comfortable throughout the night.

I appreciate that it comes with two layers, with the top one being very soft and feeling like I'm being cradled. The water conforms well to the shape of my head and neck, which is why it reduces neck and back pain well.

As for its sturdiness, I feel like it holds up well to pressure and even a few accidents. It won't puncture and its soft top layer is strong, so it protects the water base under it. Besides its faulty instructions, I believe it to be very effective in improving sleep!

Hypoallergenic and Easy-to-Adjust

ASleepyWolf rating

  • It can last for many years and still feel new
  • Easy to use and adjust the water levels
  • Helps reduce pain and migraines effectively
  • A bit too high if fully filled to reach a firm level
  • Some complaints of feeling "dry" moisture

I recommend the Chiroflow Waterbase Pillow for sensitive sleepers, as it's made of a hypoallergenic fiber filling to prevent allergens from coming in. I noticed that I stopped sneezing and having a runny nose in the morning because of it!

What I appreciate most about this product is that it's very easy to use. It comes with understandable instructions and I was able to fill it with water and use within an hour. The material seems sturdy and I've read that it can last for up to five years before replacement. After a few months with it, it still feels brand new, and I can assume that it can last for longer than what I expect.

When I started sleeping on it, I was satisfied. I started sleeping quicker and waking up feeling refreshed, without migraines or feeling dizzy if I work up in the middle of the night. It didn't remove all the pain, but I feel a difference and I'm able to sleep even longer. All in all, a worthy purchase.

  • Affordable price with great value
  • Softcover with comfort and breathability
  • Cooling and has me sleep straighter
  • There are complaints of it leaking after a year
  • Not as durable as other types of water pillows

For those who are looking for something more affordable (as water pillows can be quite expensive!), then the The Duck And Goose Co Premium Water Pillow is the one for you.

This was actually my first water pillow purchase, as I wanted to test out something on the cheaper side to see how well it will hold up. Honestly, this pillow is one of the reasons why I wanted to test out more similar products! If it was able to provide great features at its price, I wondered what else a more expensive version has to offer.

You get what you pay for, of course, but I feel like it has more value because of its breathability and cooling effects. It's pretty soft and comfortable, helping me sleep with or without adding more water.

It isn't the most durable and can incur mold easier than other pricier pillows. Also, it's a bit on the heavier side. However, as long as you care for it properly, it can last for as long as two years. The best for any sleeping position and for those on a budget.

  • Cooling effects to prevent night sweats and hot flashes
  • Very soft and comfortable, I sleep straighter and without pain
  • Conforms to any sleeping position or head shape easily
  • Not the best for lightweight people
  • Comes at an expensive price

While Gel Memory Foam Water Pillow by Mediflow is a bit on the pricier side, you get what you pay for and more! I was a bit hesitant spending this much on a single pillow, but after I tested this out, I can see why Mediflow is one of the trusted companies for their sleeping products.

It's got all the features you need for a comfortable night's sleep, from the cooling effects down to comfort and pain relief with its gel memory foam layer. It had the soft feeling to it but also stayed firm underneath, so it helped me sleep even better. The pillow conforms to your head and doesn't make any noise when you move around, making it suitable for any type of sleeping position.

Definitely worth the price, though it isn't the best for a lighter person because your weight may not give enough pressure for the pillow to shape.

  • Soft top layer with a firm base helps keep pain to a minimum
  • Easy to adjust water levels with understandable instructions
  • Jumbo size to fit all head shapes
  • Sometimes sloshes and creates a little noise
  • A bit on the heavier side especially when filled up

Last but not least, we have Elite Fiberfill Single Water Pillow by Mediflow. It's a lower price compared to the other Mediflow products tried and tested, but it still offers the host of features that make it a quality pillow to sleep on.

The pillow's water levels are pretty easy to adjust and I've had no complaints in terms of noise. It has a soft top layer and I chose to have a firmer base, so it conforms well to my head shape while still providing the support I need to lessen the pressure and neck strain I feel in the morning. After a few weeks, the pain has gotten considerably less and I don't toss and turn anymore.

It's best for back or side sleepers, unless you DON'T add as much water, making it workable for stomach sleepers as well. It's simple and works, doing its job in having you sleep straight and well.

Wrapping it Up

Water pillows are best known for how it reduces neck pain and improve your sleep. You might be surprised that you'll be using water as a filling, but it actually works and its customization features are what makes it a worthy purchase! As long as you select the right one based on the way you sleep, you'll enjoy lesser pain and a fresher morning.

Editor's Pick

Of all the water pillow reviews, I believe that the Original Water Pillow by Mediflow deserves to be at the top of my list. While the instructions were faulty, it was pretty simple to set up and start using. After a few nights, I began feeling a lot better and am impressed with how it can reduce neck pain!

All you need is to fill it with water until you get the preferred firmness and sleep soundly. Just make sure that you care for it well to avoid molds! With proper care, I'm able to use this pillow for over a year, making it worth the price.
